Beyerskloof

Pinotage Palace

home to the legendary pinotage burger

It may be rustic in appearance, but here pinotage reigns supreme, with the legendary Beyers Truter as commander in chief. Beyer’s commitment to this local variety has driven a huge improvement in the quality of pinotage throughout the Cape Winelands, and at Beyerskloof you can taste some of the best examples.

The red leaf motif that features on the Beyerskloof brand is a prominent décor feature in the modern tasting room, which has a window into the barrel cellar and a large oblong shaped tasting counter. In summer you can sit outside in the spacious courtyard, and in winter there is a substantial fire in the lounge area. The best place to be on a good day is outside on the covered wooden terrace, where the vineyard below is so close you can almost pick your own grapes. The splendid Stellenbosch mountain vista may well persuade you to have another glass and stay for a meal at the Red Leaf Restaurant.

Their pinotage burger has gained something of a cult following. Topped with a sweet onion relish, the burger has been slowly stewed in pinotage (what else) and is served with chips cut into fat wedges. There is even pinotage ice cream, and pinotale, a craft ale brewed with the pinotage reserve. Of course the restaurant serves other traditional dishes for breakfast and for lunch…but we can’t help feeling that that would be missing the point.
