Wide tourism appeal

on a very old Stellenbosch estate

Blaauklippen is geared to make tourists feel welcome, with a large outside patio, and a spacious cellar style interior, cleverly designed with inter-leading arches that separate the spaces. There is a big tasting area where you should taste the Blaauklippen speciality, Zinfandel, a variety that is hardly grown in the Cape. The arches link a restaurant area, a vinoteque and a shop selling jams, spices, homemade chocolates and original artworks. The restaurant offers platters and a small menu of rather pedestrian fare, including soup, hamburgers, and quiche.

There is a Spirits Room, somewhat dimly lit on a winter’s day, but with lots of leather, brick and old copper utensils. Here you can taste potstill brandies, or the range of grappa and eau de vie, and the most recent introduction, craft gins from the Triple Three Distillery, based on the estate. The gins come in three versions: traditional juniper, citrus, and a botanical version with rooibos. You get to smell the juniper and citrus and botanicals used in the distillation, taste the gins neat and then again with tonic. The botanical was fabulous.

My favourite space is the old cellar where giant foudres (barrels holding 4000 litres plus) are still used today. You get a feel of how old Blaauklippen is- it dates back to 1682- and even more so, if you take a walk through the old werf (farmyard) with its crumbling stone walls, the view of the mountains, and some fine old examples of Cape Dutch architecture. The name Blaauwklippen comes from the Dutch word meaning “blue rocks”.

Blaauklippen also does picnics and has a very popular all day, all year Sunday market. Children have their own playground, pony rides and alpacas and goats to feed!
