Welcoming and homely

it’s like visiting a dear family friend

The drive up the mountain through the vineyards to the parking at Delheim is lovely. Walking through the entrance, it feels as if you are visiting an old family friend, not a grand estate. Follow a brick pathway, signposted with quaint wooden signage, through a veritable jungle of garden greenery and shady trees and arrive at the Downstairs Cellar and the restaurant where the buildings are all face brick, and covered in grape vines and ivy. At the door to the cellar is the winelands equivalent of flying ducks, and inside the homeliness is emphasized with pine tables and granny print cushions, lots of bric a brac, hand-carved barrels, candles on stands made from barrel staves, photos of the early years on the estate, and cobwebs collecting on the windowsill.

The Sperling family came from Germany, but have owned the estate for decades, and the welcome they give to visitors is a genuine one. Inside the atmospheric cellars the staff make wine tasting a special experience, and the Garden Restaurant promises German gemütlichkeit to its patrons . Tables are set on the terrace in the garden, with those lovely views across the valley to Table Mountain. The menu offers light meals, platters, German specialities such as bratwurst and zwiebelkuchen and South African favourites such as Cape Malay chicken curry and Karroo lamb shanks. If the weather’s not good you can eat inside.

Delheim do very good picnics, offering a wicker basket for two, stuffed with lovely goodies in glass jars, and a bottle of wine to enjoy under the oaks in a clearing next to the river. There is a picnic lunch especially for children too, who will have a great time splashing in the water.

And as you leave, ring the wishing bell and make a wish. Odds are you will be wishing for a return visit.
