Dornier is a famous name associated with flying boats and military aircraft, but here only a few photographs and some beadwork model aeroplanes hanging in the tasting room, are a reminder of the Dornier’s family history.
Christoph, the founder of the wine state, is not an engineer like his famous family, but a well known artist who bought five neighbouring farms to establish the Dornier estate in 1995.
The dramatic curving roof of the extraordinary contemporary cellar reflects the mountains behind it and is mirrored in the giant koi pond at certain times of day. It’s a splendid piece of architecture, best viewed from the wide terrace of the Bodega Restaurant opposite.
The restaurant and tasting room are in a renovated old barn, decorated with cheerful, colourful panache. The restaurant is open daily for lunch, and offers a wide selection of contemporary cuisine. The terrace has mist coolers, so you can relax outside on the hottest of days, in the evenings tapas are on offer from 4 to 6pm. The jungle gym and the wide lawns alongside the restaurant are a great playground for children.
The dramatic logo on the wine labels was designed by Christoph Dornier and depicts the seduction of Leda by Zeus in the disguise of a swan. The original hangs next to the counter in the tasting lounge. It all adds up to a winery with a powerful artistic sensibility.
