Goats, cheese & unusual wines

Exemplary social and environmental practices

A very large Billy Goat Gruff with enormous horns stands proud on the landmark goat tower at Fairview. A smaller female version keeps him company and is a perfect petting animal to delight the youngsters.

The goat tower is in honour of Fairview’s 1000 strong herd of goats, who produce enough milk to keep a very successful cheese factory in business. The winery is also one of South Africa’s most innovative, with exemplary social and environmental practices and Fair Trade accreditation to boot.

Tasting here involves both wine and award winning cheese. You can taste a variety of wines at the circular tasting tables, ably guided by the well trained staff, and then wander over to the cheese section to see how your favourite wine pairs with the different cheeses. And there certainly is a huge variety of wines. Over and above the usual crowd pleasers, Fairview produces a whole range of wines that are rarely found in South Africa, including Durif, Tannat, Barbera, Sangiovese, and Tempranillo.

The goat theme is carried through to the very popular rustic Goatshed Restaurant, open every day for breakfast and lunch. Pick and choose to create a Mediterranean style meal with cheese platters, fresh breads baked on site, salads and cold meats and then choose your wine from the full range of Fairview, La Capra and Goats do Roam wines. We really liked that the wine is available in 200 ml carafes, at cellar door prices.

The Fairview crest on all the labels has a goat (naturally) as well as a farm worker as its primary motifs – paying homage to the two pillars of their success.
