Hillcrest Berry Orchards

Berry delicious teas

on the Helshoogte hillside

If you love berries- strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries- then pop into Hillcrest Berry Orchards between tastings. You’ll find fresh berries in summer, picked on the farm that day, but out of season you will have to make do with 1kg packets of frozen fruits. There are enough different flavours of jam, all hand made on the farm, to stock a farmer’s market. Not to mention vinegars, relishes, preserves and liqueurs for sale.

The venue is a cottage perched on the mountainside- the decor is somewhat old fashioned and homely, but the welcome is warm and the view is brilliant. Sit outside on the terrace and tuck into tea with the legendary Hillcrest freshly baked warm scones or enjoy a berry smoothie.

There is a breakfast and lunch menu with a range of dishes including burgers, bobotie, line fish and chicken pie and a small but well-selected wine list, and when we visited it was very busy.

It is a pity that you are not allowed to view the berry orchards that surround the restaurant. As compensation, we bought some delicious strawberry and almond homemade ice cream for our trip down the pass to Franschhoek.
