Kay & Monty Vineyards

Paddocks and ponies

in Plettenberg Bay

Kay and Monty vineyards lie in horse country in the Crags, just beyond Plettenberg Bay. Handsome ponies graze in the paddocks surrounding the winery, and come summer, the elite polo players of the Northern Hemisphere come here to train.
The buildings are all simple- ochre-coloured exposed face brick stables and outhouses, and the tasting room was once an orchid hothouse. It has been beautifully converted with glass windows all around, opening up onto a wide deck overlooking a dam. The vistas are huge, and seem almost Alpine, with grass-covered pastures, rolling hills, pine trees and distant mountains. Inside the barn-like structure the furniture is modern rustic, with rough hewn tables and benches and a double sided giant fireplace. It’s a big space, perfect for weddings.
The food is simple, but delightful. On the winter’s day that we visited, there were yummy pot pies and a hearty minestrone, and the platters of meats were delicious. This is a new winery and they produced their first wines in 2012. We thoroughly enjoyed the 2014 MCC bubbly.
