Klein Zalze is only 3 kilometres outside of Stellenbosch, and the winery is part of a very successful complex that includes a luxury residential development set among the vineyards, a golf course and a hotel lodge.
You reach the tasting room and restaurant down steps to an attractive brick terrace, with classic water features and pale pink washed walls. Seated under a Bedouin style tent, you have a lovely view from the terrace down to the gardens, golf course and vineyards below, and up to the mountains in the distance.
Terroir at Kleine Zalze was one of the first fine dining restaurants to open on a wine estate, and remains very popular. The décor is unpretentious and fairly informal, with the daily menu presented on chalk boards. The chef is renowned for the vibrant flavours of his dishes, which are locally sourced. In summer, lunch on the terrace almost always lasts late into the afternoon.
The tasting room is pretty ordinary, but you can sit outside on the rustic benches and take in the view. It’s best to go in summer when you be outside, although the excellent Kleine Zalze old vine chenins taste great at any time of the year.
