Neil Ellis is a powerful figure in the South African wine industry and “one of the most widely respected of the Cape’s senior winemakers”(Tim James in Wines of the New South Africa).
Today Neil’s whole family is involved, with his son now making the wines, and you will find their winery and tasting room at the start of the Helshoogte pass in Stellenbosch.
It is a big, modern industrial style building, built in 2010 with rammed earth walls to satisfy the family’s genuine interest in being environmentally sustainable. There is a lot of glass, gleaming grey cement floors, a wall of corks and contemporary stainless steel chandeliers. You can taste outside next to a vineyard looking up toward the Simonsberg, or in the two spacious air-conditioned tasting rooms furnished with modern wooden tables. If you need a little sustenance, you can order a cheese and charcuterie platter.
Neil Ellis does not own vineyards, but has built up long-term relationships with growers of specific vineyard sites. For example the acclaimed Groenekloof Sauvignon Blanc, launched in 1993, is sourced from vineyards situated near Darling on a series of hills running along the Cape West Coast. The 2015 vintage was awarded 5 stars in Platter’s Wine Guide. Neil has also been an innovator with his Grenache and Cinsaut wines, which are simply delicious.
Serious wine lovers can book a vintage tasting in the Vinoteque…it will be an unforgettable experience as so many of the wines have aged really well.
