The exterior of the very modern Pasarene tasting room is wrapped in wood, slatted and curved to great effect, in a design inspired by a swallow’s nest. The name Pasarene is from the Latin taxonomy for swallows and terns and the label of their Bordeaux blend, Marathon, features an exquisitely drawn swallow.
The feel of the interior is warm and welcoming, largely due to the friendly sommelier with the curious name of Billet, who pours and explains the 3 wines with infectious passion. The space is all glass with 360 degree views over vineyards to the Simonsberg. The textures are slate, wood and leather. Everything is very stylish from the armchairs grouped around copper tables to the Riedel glassware used for the tastings. Outside a wide patio overlooks a dam and the fynbos landscaping is already taking shape.
The winery is a joint venture between Martin Smith, formerly winemaker at Vilafonte, and Johannesburg entrepreneur Ndabe Mareda. The tasting room was opened in December 2017 but the wines have been making an impact for the past few years, with the 2015 Chardonnay scooping a 5-star Platter award in 2018. The grapes for the wines are currently sourced in Elgin, Philadelphia and Tulbagh. There are only 3 wines, each one excellent, and tasting them in such elegant surroundings only enhances the pleasure.
