This winery is a partnership between the South African Rupert and the French Rothschild families, so it’s hardly surprising that evidence of the high standards and friendly service begins at the gate. On arrival you are handed a map which guides you through the impeccable vineyards and silver grey olive groves and up to the mountainside tasting rooms where everything exudes elegance and luxury.
It’s a beautiful space, with glass walls that can be opened up to embrace the stunning view of the Simonsberg, while an outside area of gorgeous beanbags and elegant chairs makes the perfect space to enjoy the champagne and oysters that are served on Saturdays.
There was plenty in the décor that we lusted after; pottery by Anton Bosch, gorgeous multi-faceted copper lights hanging above the tasting bar and sophisticated couches in blues and greys. Having checked out all the lounges and private tasting spaces, we settled down to try the wine and food tasting menu presented at tables neatly laid with crystal glasses, silver cutlery, white napery and the most elegant breadsticks imaginable.
There are 3 Rupert & Rothschild wines, a chardonnay and two red blends, and each is paired with a small but substantial dish, freshly prepared in the kitchen. One of the dishes was crispy pasture reared pork belly confit squash with fennel gratin, delicious flavours that were the perfect counterpoint for the Classique red wine.
There is also a five dish wine and food tasting menu which includes some of the Rothschild Champagne, one of the Rothschild Bordeaux wines and a Malbec from Argentina, as well as a very small menu if you would prefer to stick to just one dish.
We loved the idea that you can taste one or two international wines from the Rothschild stables, and we will certainly go back for the Champagne Barons De Rothschild and oyster tasting (what a mouthful). I think it is our duty to toast such a stylish international collaboration.
