Rust en Vrede is a picture perfect Cape winery. Two beautiful Cape Dutch buildings, both national monuments, sit amongst big old oak trees in front of a lush green lawn edged with beds of hydrangeas, agapanthus and roses.
This winery focuses exclusively on red wines – they are among South Africa’s best and have featured 5 times in the Wine Spectator’s annual Top 100 Wines of the World. Savour them in the modern and stylish tasting room, which is decorated in warm tones with lots of wood and glass, or outside the restaurant under big umbrellas, overlooking the garden. Lunchtimes from Monday to Saturday feature the “Winemakers Lunch” which comprises either a sirloin steak, French fries, a garden salad and a glass of syrah, all for R200, or salmon and Steen ( a glass of chenin) for R240.
However if you enjoy really good food, then you should visit the Rust en Vrede Restaurant, one of South Africa’s most highly-rated fine dining experiences. The restaurant is situated in the historic old wine cellar, which dates back to 1785. Here you will enjoy a meal to remember. Deep red walls, white table linen, white orchids, soft candlelight, Riedel stemware, bespoke crockery and a kitchen in the middle of the room all contribute to the perfect setting for one of the restaurant’s four or six course menus. They also offer the “Estate Experience” menu, which must be booked 24 hours in advance. It is described as a “gastronomic journey” requiring 4 to five hours to complete. The food is outstanding, classic in its origins, but using top local ingredients prepared with South African influences to produce intense yet harmonious flavours. But be warned, while prices are reasonable by international standards, they are at the very top end for South African restaurants.
We recommend Rust en Vrede; it is a visual and a culinary treat.
