Saxenburg

Big steaks

Powerful reds

If you are a meat eater and enjoy bold red wines, you will definitely enjoy Saxenburg.

Situated at the Cape Town end of the Polkadraai road, this is one of the Cape’s oldest farms, dating back to 1693 and has been owned by a Swiss family since 1989. As you drive up, you will probably see Zebra and Bontebok grazing in paddocks alongside the road.

The Cattle Baron restaurant has a glass frontage, looking out onto a lawn, studded with palm trees. It is your typical modern steak house, doing meat and burgers really well, salads less so. It is very popular with local businessmen who come to enjoy the steaks of every size and description.

There is a large and comfortable tasting room and an outside terrace. The owners have a love of guinea fowl and this is the Saxenburg emblem, also reflected in a range called The Guinea Fowl Collection and a fun table wine called The Drunken Fowl. Saxonburg has a well-deserved reputation for making excellent shiraz.
