Villiera

A sunset safari and the red wine will tick all his boxes

the bubblies and nougat will tick hers

Head half an hour out of Cape Town and you’ll find giraffe, along with wildebeest, eland, other buck and over a hundred bird species in the Villiera Sanctuary. Add a tasting of Villiera wines and charming staff to that and you have a winning experience.

Book ahead for a 2 hour game drive on a summer evening. The outing starts with welcome glass of bubbly, followed by a drive through the vineyards and then a sunset game drive, finishing off with wine tasting and snacks.

The tasting room is a large outdoor courtyard under shady oak trees, with an air-conditioned modern interior. Here you can taste the wide range of wines and best of all, you can enjoy a tasting of the famous Villiera bubbly (Method Cap Classique sparkling wines) paired with fabulous nougats and Turkish Delight. Now that’s what I call food pairing! Sweet heaven, what more could a girl want…

Villiera is renowned as a leader in environmental practices: they have used no insecticides for the past 14 years, relying on 1,000 Peking ducks to do the job. The family has planted over 70 000 indigenous trees and now use solar power for nearly half their energy. The farm has a superb crèche run by Pebbles (www.pebblesproject.co.za) and there is a genuine commitment to social responsibility. You can enjoy their wines knowing that they really deserved their award from UK retailer Marks and Spencer for the best “sustainable farming” of all their suppliers world-wide in 2010.
