Orchards and vineyards cover the slopes below Almenkerk and the valley with its vast blue expanse of sky provides a dramatic setting for tasting wine.
The winery itself is modern and simple, the ochre colour blending easily into the landscape. Rough hewn wooden tables placed on the chipped stone terrace, along with natural stone walls, a water feature and indigenous plants all contribute to a natural harmony.
The tasting room is very stylish with black marble floors, a small tasting counter, and a wooden refectory style table. Natalie and Joris, the couple who run the farm, are almost always available in the tasting room, and are genuinely enthusiastic about sharing their passion for their vineyards and their wines, which makes it such a pleasure to taste here. They will be as simple or as detailed as you like, even taking you into the cellar should you wish. Their wines are very elegant, perfect to accompany food.
If you would like to picnic, you can bring your own or book a hamper to collect at the Peregrine Farm Stall en route. Buy a bottle of wine, and spread out at one of the terrace tables or on the lawns around the dam and just soak up the view. For the energetic there is an adventure trail, quite steep in places, through the reclaimed fynbos. The route is marked and you can pick up a map in the tasting room, as well as a booklet identifying the flora and fauna you might see.
All in all, Almenkerk is a lovely way to escape the madding crowd.
