Anthonij Rupert Wyne

There's so much to experience

at this luxury estate

At Antonij Rupert Wyne, there are two totally different tasting venues and experiences, as well as a scenic tram drive and a legendary motor museum. You can choose just one or make a day of it and buy an estate package which includes everything, starting at the motor museum.

We usually see men trailing sadly behind their womenfolk as they look, admire, touch and buy, but in a motor museum the roles are reversed. I have never seen so many happy, animated men as in the Franschhoek Motor Museum. 4 large Cape-style barns surround a wide courtyard and house the beautiful antique, veteran, and vintage cars in air-conditioned comfort. 80 examples from Johann Rupert’s vast personal collection are exhibited at one time, and the cars are rotated roughly 4 times a year. We marvelled at the 1903 Model A Ford and while I fancied the 1928 Bugatti 35B (there are only 12 left in the world), the Jaguar E-types were clearly the favourite with most ladies.

Running between the Motor Museum and the tasting locations is the Franschhoek Motor Museum tram. Hop on because the trip takes a scenic tour through manicured paddocks, lovely gardens, rows of vines and fabulous views of the valley and mountains. You’ll also catch a glimpse of the exquisite L”Ormarins manor house.

Hop off at the La Garonne manor house, a beautifully restored Cape Dutch thatched home with classic mutton leg gables. It is elegantly furnished and guests are free to wander around the rooms and then enjoy their tasting in the drawing room or on the wide and shaded terrace. You can choose from different flights of the Anthonij Rupert premium wines- we chose the bubblies, and a flight of reds. We were encouraged to take our glasses and enjoy the bubbly in the pretty walled rose garden- you can even have high tea served in the gazebo here if you book in good time!

Then it’s back on the tram, and down the tree lined avenue to the very modern Terra del Capo Tasting Room with its dramatic stone triangular entrance flanked by Dylan Lewis cheetah sculptures. Upstairs overlooking the cellar, you can taste the Terra del Capo Italian varieties or the lifestyle wines in the prettily packaged Protea range. Downstairs in the small but stylish restaurant, you can enjoy a range of platters or a selection of delicious cold or hot antipasti. The beef comes from the estate’s own herd, and the herbs and salads are all locally grown.

Anthonij Rupert Wyne own a portfolio of 4 wine farms- in Franschhoek, Darling, Elandskloof and Kasteelberg (Swartland)- each one with a very different profile in terms of climate, soil and varieties. The result is a wide range of wines, different in style and price points, that make for very worthwhile tastings.
