The brick drive through the imposing modern entrance takes you to an equally imposing circle where a rather menacing giant silver frog looks down over this beautiful scenic estate.
Anura is the Greek word for frog, and because there were so many wild frogs on the farm, it became the new name of the farm when the current family bought it in 1989. The drive takes you down through the vineyards and past manicured lawns and beautiful dams to the tasting room.
It is a large contemporary raw brick building, with cement floors and wooden beams. There is a big fireplace for winter, and you can also taste outside around a giant pond, complete with more frog figures. The farm makes its own Forest Hill cheeses- Camembert, Brie, Marisch, Manchego and a Mountain Cheese- and offers these paired with the different wines for tasting. There is also a boutique charcuterie on the farm, the12 Pigs Charcuterie, so their platters are a very tasty accompaniment to the wines.
Anura makes a lovely MCC wine –the 2011 Anura Brut 2011 Methode Cap Classique was a 2016 Platter Five Star. We suggest you buy a bottle and enjoy it outside in the restaurant area, which is linked to the next-door Wagon Trail Brewery. It is a lovely shady garden centred around a pond overhung with reeds where Weaver birds constantly flit in and out of their nests.
There are several craft beers that can be tasted in the brewery, and you can order from their pub style menu. It was such a hot day when we visited that all we could manage was a green salad but the burgers and pulled pork sandwiches on the table alongside looked very tasty.
There is a deli selling the cheese, the charcuterie and Froggitt sauces, jams and vinegars, also made on the farm. There was some super looking bread on sale as well.
There is a lot happening on Anura. A new conference facility is being built, which will have the most stunning views across to the Simonsberg and a low impact vineyard village housing development is in the planning stages.
