An Arabian poet wrote: ‘Bread may feed my body, but my horse feeds my soul.” He left out the wine, but at Avontuur you will find a splendid combination of all three.
Located close to the main road, in the foothills of the Helderberg, the estate is lovely, set amongst vineyards, oak trees and picket fence paddocks. Avontuur is a thoroughbred horse stud, breeding champion yearlings. There’s something very special about sitting on the outside terrace looking at these magnificent animals, even if you are not a horsey person.
There is a cosy tasting room, where you can taste their considerable range of wines. Naturally, the premium wines all carry the names of famous horses from the farm. Avontuur also make a fine brandy, which you can taste in a chocolate thimble. Drinking that was certainly an avontuur (adventure) of note. I coughed, I spluttered, my eyes watered, and then a chocolatey warmth enveloped me. I was glad I wasn’t driving.
The restaurant is a warm friendly welcoming place. They started out 10 years ago serving lunches and now they do breakfasts and dinners as well. It’s popular with locals who enjoy the contemporary country cuisine, served in generous portions. Roast duckling with van der Hum sauce is a perennial favourite.
You can enjoy a meal on the shady outside verandah, or inside where underfloor heating and an open fire will conquer the coldest Cape winter.
