Bartinney on Bird St is a bar with a poet’s flair. It’s got that kind of old school leather armchair comfy-ness about it. They have taken the usual formula – wine, décor and a point of sale in Stellenbosch and added an element of introspection and allowed the creative juices to run slightly wilder than usual. The wooden paneling and the hints of red coupled with their imposing dark angel sets a moody stage for an interesting evening’s prowl.
It’s a small, intimate space so you are bound to brush up against some other bodies, so order a bottle and some snacks and conversation will surely flow. Not sure whether to go out or stay home? Check their facebook page to see what live gigs are on, or call your mates, meet for a glass of wine on the outdoor tables and start your evenings shenanigans from here.
Bartinney produce 3 premium wines- their chardonnay is the best known but they also have a sauvignon blanc and an elegantly delicious cabernet sauvignon. Their second label is called Noble Savage and packs loads of student appeal.
If trendy bars aren’t your scene, and you would prefer a quiet contemplative tasting, the Tasting Shed on the estate itself is the place to go. Lovely views of the valley and lots of fat sofas and old wood tables lend an unhurried feel to proceedings. Bartinney is set against the steep slopes of the Helshoogte Pass. I thought that their slogan “wines made on a mountain” was very apt when I saw their vineyards running up the mountainside, some as high as 550 metres above sea level and at angles of 45 degrees.
The owners are passionate conservationists and have planted more than 5000 trees and fynbos on what was once a pine plantation. They have also planted fields of blushing brides, Leucadendrons and proteas. When the proteas are flowering, there are huge baskets of them for sale at the wine bar.
