De Grendel

The best view of Table Mountain

A cellar built on feng-shui principles

We think the prize for the best view of Table Mountain and Table Bay from a winery has to go to De Grendel. The estate is less than 20 minutes drive from town, so it’s perfect for a quick getaway and change of scene.

Situated on the Tygerberg Hill, the De Grendel cellar, restaurant and tasting area look serenely out over terraced lawns, vineyards and green fields where Holstein stud cattle and indigenous Nguni cows graze. Loads of geese are on patrol at the dam, and a fountain adds the gentle noise of falling water to the tranquillity. Then there to crown it all, is beautiful Table Mountain in all its glory, and if you’re here for dinner, the mesmerising view of the city at night.

The cellar was built according to Feng Shui principles, and we liked the various windows through which you can see the working area. The open plan tasting room includes a long veranda, some of it under a Bedouin style tent, and a lounge area with a fireplace for winter. Cheese and meat platters are available to accompany their wide range of wines.

The restaurant is decorated in quiet creams and earthy tones, with a traditional rietdak ceiling, wooden floors, family portraits on the walls, and an arched glass wall looking into the barrel cellar. The food is very good, modern South African, served on lovely blue and white china. I enjoyed a delicious wild mushroom risotto followed by organic lamb shank, and I am told the pork belly is a firm favourite. The waitrons are particularly friendly and gracious.

De Grendel is a carbon negative farm and is active in preserving the natural renosterveld vegetation on the hills behind the cellar. That feels very important, given that the farm is surrounded by urban development. And it is precisely that fact that gives this farm an extra special edge…it’s a beautiful estate protecting important parts of our wilderness from  townhouse developments. Long may it last!
