The ladybird

Alive and well in Stellenbosch

From the R44, you can see the ladybird, a European symbol for organic produce, painted on the side of the winery. Laibach’s German owners started farming sustainably when they bought the estate in 1994 and began the conversion to organic in 2000, making them pioneers of organic farming in Stellenbosch.

The inside tasting room is very simple, but most tastings take place on the shady outside patio, with deep arches framing the view to the dam and vineyards. A walkway, known as the jetty, protrudes from the winery, and from there you have a bird’s-eye view over the vineyards all the way across to Table Mountain and Lion’s Head. It must be spectacular at sunset on a clear day. Sadly on the day we visited, the heat and numerous veld fires had made everything rather hazy.

If you are a merlot fan, you will enjoy the two that Laibach produce- the 2014 Claypot Merlot was a Platter 5-star wine in 2017.
