Love a glass of bubbly?

Here’s where it all began

What better place for a glass of bubbly than where it all began? It was here at Simonsig that over forty years ago, Frans Malan made Kaapse Vonkel, the first South African methode champenoise bubbly (i.e. using the same method as champagne). Today this estate remains famous for its Cap Classiques and on a busy day, the staff will be outside under the oaks, executing a sabrage with a flourish, and filling champagne glasses to applause. (Sabrage is a technique for opening a Champagne bottle with a saber, used for ceremonial occasions.)

Simonsig was one of the original 3 founders of the Stellenbosch Wine Route and remains hugely popular for its lovely location and wide choice of quality wines. At the entrance giant posters display the story of the farm’s commitment to conservation, as well as information on grape varieties and the Stellenbosch region. In summer you can choose to taste outside, seated next to beds of pastel hydrangeas or inside at one of the long yellowwood tables in the spacious tasting room.

The restaurant, Cuvée, has recently been redecorated but the unusual chandeliers that incorporate wine glasses have been retained. 2016 has welcomed a new chef and a lighter style of dining with a focus on seasonal fare. If you fancy something light, there is a range of delicious summer salads to which you can add tempura prawns or smoked trout or a selection of open sandwiches served on farm bread. For the hungry ones, there are steaks, burgers, even grilled fish and vegetarian options. The extensive Simonsig range of wines is available by the glass, and for the thirsty ones, there is craft beer available.
