Wine & conservation

on the road less travelled

Situated in the Voor Paardeberg, Vondeling is not that far from either Cape Town or Paarl, yet it’s like visiting another world. No traffic but for the occasional farm bakkie, completely quiet, this lovely valley is well worth the visit.
Vondeling itself nestles underneath the Paardeberg mountain, while the tasting room is on the opposite side of the road, next to a pretty chapel, purpose built for the weddings that are hosted here. The tasting room is spacious and has a lovely terrace sheltered by a pergola, which is covered by an ornamental grape vine. The view is a 180 degree panorama of the valley and distant mountains.
The tasting room is not open at weekends unless you book ahead, in which case they will happily open up for you, and will also provide platters of your choice. During the week you are not likely to find many other folk here, so it’s a perfect place to enjoy some serenity with your wine.
The owners of Vondeling are passionate conservationists and on the walls you will see lovely photographs of the different fynbos species found on the mountain. My favourite wine is the delicious Babiana, a white wine, blended from Chenin, Viognier, Chardonnay and Grenache Blanc. It is named after the Babiana noctiflora, whose delicate yellow flower releases its scent in the evenings to attract moths for pollination. This rare species of fynbos is found only on the Paardeberg Mountain.
Vondeling also make and sell a shiraz blend named Cura (meaning to care in Latin) in partnership with WESSA (The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa) to raise funds for conservation.
